I just want to start by thanking all our amazing members for your support through COVID lockdown and the continually shifting restrictions. We are doing our best to keep Highlite operating as we know how important fitness is to our member’s physical and mental health.

The exciting news is that the downtime has allowed us to revamp our programming to create an even more effective environment for all of you to achieve your fitness goals.

The new program has been designed to track individual progress while maintaining the fun and variety of traditional Highlite workouts. Instead of rolling through our 90+ unique workouts, each day of the week will have a semi-specific focus.

Major movement weight, sets and reps, interval times or distances, circuit intensity etc will progress and can be individually tracked via our app.

Let’s go into a bit more detail on how it will work.

Strength Focus

One of the areas that sets us most apart from other group training workouts on the market is our focus on strength training. By sticking to key compound movements and avoiding complex Olympic-style lifts, we’ve been able to introduce members of all fitness levels to effective, technique-focused strength training in a group environment. Our new structure will build on this by focusing on key lifts on specific days. Major strength movements will be tracked across a four-week training block using the principle of progressive overload.

Monday: Squat Variation Focus

Mondays we squat. This day will also feature plyometrics, sprints or power movements, total body giant sets and an upper body cardio-based finisher.

Wednesday: Upper Body Focus

Wednesday will feature an upper-body major movement (e.g. Bench Press). Like Monday there’ll be plyos, sprints or power. There are also upper body and core supersets and a lower body cardio-based finisher.

Friday: Hip Hinge Focus

Dead Lift variations and Glute Bridges are the Friday focus. Again, there’ll be plyos, sprints or power as well as a lower body and core giant set. Friday’s finisher is an upper-body dominant EMOM.

Conditioning Focus

It has been shown that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the best way to both reduce body fat and increase cardiovascular fitness. It is for that reason that the conditioning sets in traditional Highlite sessions are based on HIIT principles. Under our new program structure, we are taking the most effective and measurable aspects of our existing conditioning structures and focusing on them on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These sessions will also allow us time to spend more on mobility and utilise foam rollers to alleviate soreness.

Tuesday

Tuesday will feature intervals performed on our conditioning machines, truform runners, SkiErgs and assault bikes. The work intervals will be measurable by time, distance, number of rounds etc. (e.g. Centurion)

Thursday

Thursday will feature metabolic conditioning circuits such as AMRAPs, EMOMs, Distance v Time etc. Measurable factors of these workouts will be the number of rounds, maximum reps or distances achieved. (e.g. Metcon Monster)

Team Saturday!

Saturday will be focused on fun, featuring big team conditioning sets. (e.g. Strength in Numbers)

Why have we structured the program this way?

Every day we start with mobility and activations in our warm-up. Mobility is about getting your body to move through its full range of movement and activations is about getting your motor neurons firing in targeted muscle groups. Strength days then move into sprint set which can include plyometric exercises or power-based movements. We do these after the warm-up but before our major lifts to reduce the risk of fatigue-related injuries. We save the higher intensity and higher volume part of the workout until the end to protect the integrity of the major focus.

Alternating Strength days with Conditioning days allows for muscle and energy system recovery. This means that you can train at Highlite every day, without ‘overtraining’.

And if this seems super-complicated and you’re saying to yourself “I just wanna show up and train!”… JUST SHOW UP AND TRAIN!! We’ve spent months designing this structure so you don’t have to. It will maximise your chances of improving your strength and fitness while reducing your risk of injury, with all the variety you love from your favourite Highlite sessions.

Online Home Workouts (Why It Matters)

It goes without saying, that we are in unprecedented and uncertain times. To prevent a global disaster as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we must drastically change our normal behaviour for an indefinite period of time. Unfortunately, this means that physically coming together to stay fit and healthy is no longer an option. We can and we will improvise, adapt and overcome. That’s why we’ve developed our online home workouts.

Psychological and Immunological Benefits of Physical Activity

Our reasons for engaging in physical activity are wide and varied, however, in the current climate, I think it’s important to emphasise the mental health benefits of exercise. With a reduction of face to face social interactions and the prospect of medical and financial hardships, finding ways to maintain good mental health has never been more important.

Maintaining regular exercise can:

Improve Mood

Reduce Stress

Increase feelings of energy

Improve Confidence

Also, with the risk of contracting a respiratory virus, it’s important to be aware of measures we can take to keep our immune system functioning at its best. Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones, which can contribute to lowering your risk of illness. NOTE: I’m not saying exercise makes you immune from COVID-19!

Online Home Workouts by Highlite Fitness

The good news is that Highlite have got you covered with a completely online homeworkout program you can do in your own home while self-isolating. It uses mostly bodyweight exercise that does not require equipment. However, if you have Kettlebells or Dumbells at home we will give you those options.

Here are some tips for your online home workouts

Set yourself a start time

Just like showing up to your favourite group fitness session at Highlite, try and work off a timetable so you don’t procrastinate all day. Even better, log onto the live sessions on Zoom with Mark!

Make sure to use the warm-ups

When you’re training at home it’s easy to skip straight to the meat of the session but please use our warms ups we have created for you. They will help maintain your mobility and will activate key muscle groups for the high-intensity stuff to follow.

Continue to record your sessions where possible

Most of us have a polar HR device so make sure you jump on to the Polar Beat app and record your sessions. This is great for motivation and helps us check the intensity of the sessions. It’s a good idea to also record your sets, reps and resistance (if applicable) so you can use progressive overload to periodise your home workouts.

Share your workouts with the community

One of the main reasons we participate in small group fitness sessions is the community atmosphere that is created. It’s more important than ever to maintain the social bonds formed through exercise that we value so greatly.

Post your workouts

Encourage each other in the comments

Maintain some fun and healthy banter

Quick Shoutout

Lastly, I just want to shout out the owner, founder and master trainer of Highlite Fitness, Mark Hebblewhite. His work over the past few weeks has been nothing short of inspiring. He’s created the online home workout programs from scratch while adapting to the constant changes in restrictions. He’s kept our unique community together, fit and healthy in the toughest of times for a small business. And judging by the online engagement, you guys are fully on board to ride this thing out. I love it!

And I’m so confident that once we get through to the other side and we get to all come together again, that Highlite will be even better and still the best place to train in Newcastle!

Background

The recent rise in food documentaries has found me defending more than ever the idea of moderation and variety in one’s diet. And the Game Changers on Netflix is no exception.

Granted, there has and always will be, a small percentage of people that prefer to follow a specific diet mainly due to religious, ethical or medical reasons – and as a dietitian, I am trained and more than happy to work with these clients to ensure they are getting the best possible nutrition advice.

But something is changing, the number of clients I see wanting to adopt extreme diets is increasing, not because they have changed their religious or ethical beliefs, but mainly due to food documentaries they saw on TV.

Herein lies the problem… many of these documentaries paint a very one-sided picture with the ultimate aim to push an agenda and convert people to their way of eating. There is one particular food documentary doing the rounds at the moment that I have a profound issue with ‘The Game Changers’.

My issue is not that The Game Changers promotes the consumption of more plant-based foods, nor is it against those people that wish to adopt a vegan/vegetarian diet (that is totally your right and choice). My issue is the confusing and misleading way the presenters of the documentary suggest that their way is the ONLY way to be healthy and that EVERYONE should be eating like them. My problem is with the scaremongering tactics used to emotionally influence viewers and the ‘cherry-picking’ of studies to boost their agenda.

‘The Game Changers’ is a documentary that follows the personal journey of a former MMA fighter, James Wilks as he switches from a diet that included animal products to one that doesn’t. Along the way you are bombarded with ‘facts and studies’ that apparently prove animal products are no good for you and we should all be eating a plant-based diet.

DISCLAIMER – before I get comments about me being anti-vegan or anti-vegetarian, I want to state that I have absolutely no problem if people choose to follow these diets. You should be able to make your own decisions about your food choices. But you should at least know the full picture before making those decisions. The Game Changers and other similar one-sided food documentaries fail to provide viewers with all the information in order to make an informed decision.

Using ‘The Game Changers’ as an example I would like to bring to your attention some of the problems with one-sided food documentaries.

The Game Changers (Netflix): What They Got Right

Firstly let’s look at the positives of this documentary. The main argument that I and many other health professionals would agree on is that we should be eating more fruit and vegetables.

In this country, we are definitely behind the eight ball with our fruit and vegetable intake.

Plus, there IS plenty of evidence that supports a diet high in fruit and vegetables can improve health.

However, to then take such a leap to present the argument that you need to cut out ALL animal products and adopt a vegan/vegetarian diet for ultimate health and improve athletic performance, is a leap too far, no matter how much they try to scare you.

The Game Changers (Netflix): What They Got Wrong

Let’s put on our scientific caps as I explain two areas this documentary fails to present the full picture, preventing you from actually becoming a fully informed viewer.

The ‘evidence‘

At first glance, the documentary comes across very scientific as it quotes study after study to strengthen its agenda. However, it’s the quality of evidence that is troublesome.

Science 101

Just because something has a ‘study’ behind it does not automatically mean it is correct. There are levels of evidence we give more strength to. Lower evidence studies are those that are non-analytic/opinion-based – opinion is NOT good science. Higher evidence studies include systematic reviews of properly conducted randomised controlled trials. These are considered the gold standard.

One ‘study’ that is quoted early in the Game Changers by James Wilks in favour of a plant-based diet was on Roman Gladiators – that most Gladiators ate a plant-based diet which increased their strontium levels allowing for strong bones. However, on a closer look, this ‘study’ is not a study at all, it is a narrative, magazine article (low evidence) in a publication of the Archaeological Institute of America. I found the article and what James failed to mention is that the REASON these Gladiators ate a large amount of vegetables and grains was for fattening up, NOT to increase bone strength. The article itself even says that they didn’t exclude animal protein altogether.

‘They turned up some surprising results. Compared to the average inhabitant of Ephesus, gladiators ate more plants and very little animal protein. The vegetarian diet had nothing to do with poverty or animal rights. Gladiators, it seems, were fat. Consuming a lot of simple carbohydrates, such as barley, and legumes, like beans, was designed for survival in the arena’. (1)

When you think about it, it makes sense why these Gladiators would use carbs to ‘fatten up’. It is easier to eat more calories that come from carbohydrates as they have a lower satiety level (ie are less filling) compared to animal proteins. The Gladiators back then would have found it hard fattening up on a high protein diet. So, they weren’t necessarily vegan or vegetarian at all, they just ate a shit load of carbohydrates.

The suggestion is that Gladiators were found to have high bone mineral density because they ate a large amount of vegetables in their diet NOT because they ONLY consumed vegetables, there is a big difference. I imagine the high level of training undertaken by a Gladiator would also have been a contributing factor in developing high bone mineral density. But none of these points were raised in the documentary.

Cherry Picking

This type of reporting is called ‘cherry-picking’ and very common in pseudoscience. Pseudoscience occurs when you have an opinion and look for evidence to back up these opinions, regardless of other evidence. This is NOT science. Science looks at all data and information, then this data is critically analysed, discussed and scrutinised until a consensus within the scientific community is found. One study is not the answer, especially if aspects of that study are cherry-picked to suit opinion.

Science is objective, and for many, studies even go on to explain where the evidence may be lacking and suggest future recommendations on how the same study may be improved.

Another prime example of misrepresenting evidence is when Wilks references a small sample-sized study to draw large generalisations. He makes the claim that cow’s milk can increase estrogen and lower testosterone in men. The study he references was published in 2010 in the journal Paediatrics International. This study found that of 18 people (7 men, 6 children and 5 women) testosterone SECRETION (not overall testosterone), was reduced TEMPORARILY (2). That means his above statement was based on a study that looked at 7 men. This is not considered a large enough study to make such claims, yet when presented with scientific statements followed by flashes of references and papers, the viewer understandably believes what they are told.

Anecdotal Evidence

Many food documentaries are rife with ‘Anecdotal’ evidence. This is the type of evidence presented as fact – where a person (usually famous) changes their diet and their health improves as a result. While a change in diet MAY have contributed to the overall improvement, it is NOT the only thing that contributed. Diet plays a small role in one’s overall health, just like stress, sleep, physical activity and genetics. But ‘The Game Changers’ wants you to believe that the numerous athletes they present in their documentary all improved their performance by switching to a plant-based diet. But alas, these athlete success stories are nothing but anecdotes. You can’t draw solid conclusions from this type of ‘evidence’. What MAY have helped one person DOES NOT = EVERYONE!

Also, I find myself asking, could these athletes have achieved similar improvement in performance with just an overall increase in vegetables? Did they have to adopt a totally plant-based diet? What about all the other elite, gold medal, world record athletes that do eat meat? There are many unanswered questions when you use anecdotal evidence as a foundation for argument. It doesn’t make good science.

What is even more troubling, is that nowhere in ‘The Game Changers’ are the counter-arguments highlighted. The array of studies that dis-prove much of the evidence presented is not even mentioned. It’s easy to see why athletes and the general public get influenced by these types of food documentaries. They are based around emotion and misrepresentation. They are jam-packed with pseudoscience and to the untrained eye, very convincing.

Bias

One last thing before I wrap up. I think it is always important to search for any bias when it comes to one-sided reporting. Yes, there is bias in science – pharmaceutical companies and food companies are often a source of monetary funding into studies. But this doesn’t automatically mean the findings are wrong. It just means that the reader has been made aware of the possibility of bias. It is then up to the critical thinking skills of the reader whether to trust the findings of the study or perhaps delve a little further in order to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion. But even in most studies that exhibit the possibility of bias, they are forthcoming to tell you. ‘The Game Changers’ is riddled with bias, but do you think anyone tells the viewer? Of course not.

They are more than happy to tell us about the bias in studies that are funded by the Big Meat Industry, however, isn’t one of the studies championed in the documentary looking at Avocado vs Hamburger meat, supported by the Haas Avocado Board? I guess they missed that nugget of possible bias.

Other potential bias in the documentary starts with the producer James Cameron. In addition to being a kick-arse filmmaker, he is also CEO of Verdant Foods, an organic pea-protein company that has joined forces with Ingredion (a global ingredients company) with the aim to accelerate the plant-based protein market. So I guess financially, it’s in James Cameron’s best interest that he produces a documentary that highly favours plant-based foods.

There are many other issues and examples I could talk about where one-sided food documentaries fail, but I think you get the idea.

Take-Home Message

I didn’t write this piece to hero meat or to discredit vegan/vegetarian diets. I wrote it to educate and inform you about the importance of being critical thinkers. Too often we accept information as fact without question. It’s important that we know how to critically assess the information we are being fed.

You may be thinking ‘but I didn’t go to university, how would I know how to critically pull apart a documentary?’. You don’t have to, the mere fact that there was not one person offering a counter-argument in The Game Changers should be a red flag. We need to acknowledge when we are presented with pseudoscience and call it for what is… bad science. We need to start demanding the full picture, not just a cherry-picked version of someone’s opinion.

Most importantly, we need to stop thinking of food as black and white, good and bad, plant-based is healthy, meat will kill you. This dichotomous way of thinking is unhelpful and not healthy. The majority of us could do with eating more plant-based foods, but this does not have to be at the expense of cutting out all animal products.

When people new to Highlite ask me what we do, to save time I often start with comparing us to F45.

F45 have done an amazing job at marketing their brand of fitness and with gyms all over the world and multiple locations in Newcastle alone, most people have some understanding of what they do.

And while there are a number of similarities between Highlite and F45, there are some key differences to consider.

F45 Similarities

Group Training

The most obvious similarity between Highlite and F45 is group training. Group training is fun and adds a social element to fitness. Training alongside others motivates you to push yourself harder than you would on your own and you’re more likely to stick to it. Plus, you get expert coaching at a more affordable cost. An unlimited membership costs less than one personal training session a week! See my Group Training Blog.

HIIT Circuits

Both Highlite and F45 use HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) circuits as the basis of the workouts. This is an evidence-based approach which can burn more calories in less time, help reduce body fat and improve cardiovascular health. HIIT allows for loads of variety, increasing the fun-factor, motivating you to stick to your training. See my HIIT blog.

F45 Differences

Strength Set

An F45 advertised strength session consists of traditionally strength-based movements such as squats, lunges and chin-ups performed in a TABATA (time-based) circuit. At Highlite, we start our typical sessions with a rep-based strength set including a major movement (Squat, Dead Lift, Bench Press etc.) a supplementary movement and a core exercise. Major movements are rotated through the week and reps are adjusted to allow for gains in strength and muscle mass. See my Strength Training Blog.

Variety of Workout Structures

At Highlite we do sometimes use TABATA workouts in our conditioning set similar to F45 however we use a greater variety of HIIT circuit structures. EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute), AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) and Distance v Time style HIIT circuits create loads of variety in our sessions with double the number of workouts offered by F45. Multiple Truform runners, ski ergs and echo bikes also allow for pure cardio sprint intervals and team challenges at Highlite.

HR Guided Sessions

F45 do give you the option of wearing HR monitors during workouts. At Highlite, your membership fee covers the cost of a Polar HR monitor and all members are encouraged to wear one. This gives us real-time feedback in sessions via our big screen TVs. Through the Polar Club system, suggested HR zones are displayed throughout the workout. Some sessions even use HR to guide the workout, with intervals or rest periods based on individual HR zones. See HR Tech Blog.

F45 of Highlite Fitness? How To Decide

In this article, we’ll look into 6 HIIT benefits worth breaking a sweat over.

But first, let’s sort out the definition of HIIT.

What Is HIIT?

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves intense exercise intervals alternating with low-intensity active recovery or rest.

Interval periods can vary in time and intensity depending on your fitness level. The actual exercises can differ greatly as well from traditional cardio like running or cycling to more strength-based or plyometric movements.

This type of training has become increasingly popular over the last decade and there’s a good reason for that.

It’s more effective than other forms of training and much more fun!

Here’s why.

HIIT Benefit 1: Burn More Calories in Less Time (HIIT Benefit 1)

HIIT training tends to burn more calories than low-moderate intensity continuous exercise. This is due to the higher demands placed on the body and increased exertion during a HIIT session. That means you can burn more calories in less time. One particular study compared the calories burned during 30 minutes each of HIIT, weight training, running and biking. They found that HIIT burned 25–30% more calories than the other forms of exercise (1).

HIIT Benefit 2: Boost Your Metabolism

Not only are you more likely to burn more calories during a HIIT session, but your body also needs more energy to recover and get back to a state of rest. This means your metabolism will be increased and you’ll be burning more calories long after your workout.

Researchers found that HIIT increases your metabolism after exercise more so than jogging and weight training. The same study also found that metabolism may shift towards using fat for energy rather than carbohydrates (2).

HIIT Benefit 3: Reduce Body Fat

With more calories burned before and after a workout, it will come as no surprise to you that HIIT is a great way to reduce body fat. And because HIIT sessions often include resistance training you are more likely to maintain muscle mass while reducing body fat.

One study found that people performing HIIT three times per week for 20 minutes per session lost 2 kgs, of body fat in 12 weeks — without any dietary changes. 17% of this fat loss was in visceral fat, which is the fat surrounding vital organs that are linked to chronic diseases.

Weight training is still the best form of exercise to increase muscle mass, but high-intensity intervals may contribute to a small amount of muscle growth in relatively unfit individuals (3)(4).

HIIT Benefit 4: Improved Cardio Vascular Health

Interval training is more effective than moderate continuous activity for increasing cardiovascular health. According to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, the aerobic capacity gained as a result of 6 to 8 weeks of endurance training can be obtained in only 2 weeks through high-intensity intervals (5).

HIIT Benefit 5: It’s Fun (and You’re More Likely to Stick to it)

Number 5 on our list of HIIT benefits might come as a surprise.

Most people would consider the idea of a 10km jog equally boring and horrific. I personally love a 10km run but I’m not most people. Whereas the idea of shorter, more manageable periods of effort with active recovery is much more appealing.

Finding an exercise you actually enjoy is vital for continued participation. So you are more likely to stick to your fitness regime if it consists of HIIT training.

HIIT Benefit 6: It’s Versatile

Because the effectiveness of HIIT doesn’t rely on the actual exercises you include, it’s so easy to create a lot of variety to your session. Add to that, the number of ways you can structure a session, you’re only limited by your imagination.
